Economy Code Red, because of MERS

The country's economy is greatly influenced by MERS which is ongoing for more than a month. According to a research done from Korea Dining Industry on 8~14th, 560 restaurants' sales dropped 38.5% compared to the last 2 weeks. Not only dining industry, but also travel agencies, performing hall and theaters, credit card companies, financial firms, farms and agriculture, economic industries and much more have faced major losses due to MERS. Korea Economic Research Institute assumed that if MERS was to continue throughout August, the loss of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will be up to 20 billion dollars.

메르스 충격, 경제가 무너진다

메르스 사태가 한달 가까이 지속되며 경제 전반이 타격을 입었다. 한국외식산업연구원이 지난 8∼14일 560개 외식업체를 조사한 결과, 2주 전과 비교해 평균 매출액이 38.5% 감소했다. 외식업종은 물론 여행·관광업종, 공연·극장가 등 문화산업, 신용카드사 등 금융업, 농축산업 등 경제산업 전반으로 메르스 피해가 크다.

한국경제연구원은 메르스 사태가 8월 말까지 갈 경우 국내총생산(GDP) 손실액은 20조922억원에 이를 것으로 예측했다.
