The magnitude-7.3 quake -- centered midway between the capital of Kathmandu and Mount Everest -- hit hardest in districts northeast of the capital. It terrified a nation already shell-shocked and struggling after a more powerful quake on April 25 killed more than 8,150 and flattened entire villages, leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. People of Kathmandu shouted that the entire country might come to an end. Frightened residents in the capital, who had returned to their homes only a few days ago, were once again setting up tents outdoors. The police advises the residents to stay indoors and communicate through messages instead of calling.

12일(현지시간) 발생한 규모 7.3의 추가 강진으로 네팔인들이 다시 공포에 떨고 있다. 규모 7.8의 첫 강진이 발생한뒤 17일 만이다. 이로 인해 사망자가 또 발생했다.

수도 카트만두에서는 이날 낮 12시35분께 지진이 발생한 후 여진까지 이어졌다. 건물 붕괴를 우려한 주민 수천 명이 거리로 뛰쳐나왔다. 아이들을 꼭 안고 대피하는 가족들의 모습도 곳곳에서 목격됐다고 외신들은 전했다. 사람들은 가족과 친지의 안부를 확인하기 위해 집으로 뛰어갔다. 거리는 통신망 두절로 먹통이 된 휴대전화를 붙들고 소리치는 사람들로 가득찼다. 카트만두의 한 시민은 "네팔이 이번에 완전히 파괴될 것 같다"며 고함을 지르기도 했다.

상점들은 서둘러 문을 닫았고, 통신 뿐만 아니라 전력이 끊긴 곳도 많은 것으로 전해졌다. 노숙 생활을 예감한 일부 주민들은 천막을 가져나오거나 음식물을 챙겨오는 등 발빠르게 대처했다.

네팔 경찰은 주민들에게 건물 밖으로 대피하고, 전화통화보다는 문자메시지로 연락을 취할 것을 권고했다.
