Communicating icon, Mayor Park Won Soon is being embroiled in controversy. Mayor Park stated on the 10th that he will complete the Seoul Station overpass within his tenure. But the South Gate Market merchants are strongly opposing because of the heavy traffic congestion. Park has looking at the economical growth that can be made possible when the overpass can become a park. The merchants in South Gate Market are strongly against this because this may bring the downfall of the marketplaces and also bring heavy traffic jam. The Seoul Station Overpass was opened to citizens this day and this is the 2nd time in 45 years. This was not opened for people ever since the tape cutting ceremony in 1970 held with former president Park Jung Hee and his wife. Seoul emphasized the lifestyle people can enjoy such as eating, watch performances, read and just kick back and relax. There were approximately 48 thousand people who have visited the Seoul Station Overpass. This is four times the number compared to 13 thousand visitors last year October.

[글로벌 코리아]소통시장? 불통시장?

소통의 상징이던 박원순 서울시장이 '불통시장' 논란에 휩싸였다. 박 시장은 임기 내 서울역 고가 대체도로를 완공하겠다고 10일 밝혔다. 남대문 시장 상인은 거세게 반대했다. 교통체증을 우려해서다.

박 시장은 서울역 고가가 공원화될 경우 '경제적 재생' 효과가 나타날 것이라고 내다봤다. 남대문 시장 상인들은 서울역 고가 공원화 사업을 남대문시장 일대 상권 약화와 교통난을 이유로 반대하고 있다.

서울역 고가는 이날 시민에게 개방됐다. 45년 만에 두 번째다. 서울역 고가는 1970년 준공 행사 때 고 박정희 전 대통령 내외가 테이프 컷팅을 위해 걸어 올라갔을 때를 제외하고는 보행 공간으로 개방된 사례가 없었다.

시는 고가에서 도시락을 먹고 공연을 보고 책도 읽으며 머무르는 시간을 갖도록 하는데 중점을 뒀다.

이날 고가를 방문한 시민은 4만8000명에 달한 것으로 서울시는 집계했다. 지난해 10월 첫 개방 당시 방문객 1만3000명의 4배에 가까운 규모다.
