[Global Korea]Incheon Airport Customs Uncovers Drugs - 'Record Breaking Amount'

A record amount of drugs have been mailed to South Korea during the first three months of this year due to the brisk use of social networking services by dealers, customs authorities said Thursday. There were nearly 70 different kinds of drugs worth a total 4.6 billion won ($4.2 million), an official of the service said. Between January and March of 2015, some 3.6 tons of drugs entered South Korea by mail, an astronomical figure compared to 5.4 kilograms logged in the same period last year, the Korea Customs Service said. The most common drug was Khat, a leafy green plant containing stimulants that is cultivated in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The people who brought it in were a 35-year-old Ethiopian woman and a 36-year-old American man. They thought that it would be easier to bring in the drugs through Korea Customs because of its strict conditions.

국제우편과 특송 등 화물을 이용한 마약류 밀반입이 큰 폭으로 증가했다.

관세청 인천공항세관은 2015년 1분기 동안 화물을 이용해 밀반입된 시가 46억원 상당의 마약류 69종, 3.6t을 적발했다고 7일 밝혔다.

관세청 관계자는 "무게 기준으로는 우리나라 마약적발 역사상 최대 규모"라고 말했다. 가장 큰 비중을 차지한 품목은 식물성 마약 '카트'(Khat)다. 북아프리카와 아라비아 반도 등에서 주로 생산된다. 인천공항세관은 올해 3월 국내로 밀반입된 시가 22억원 상당의 카트 3.6t을 압수했다. 국민 36만명이 동시에 투약할 수 있는 분량이다. 범인은 에티오피아 국적 A(35·여)씨와 미국인 B(36)씨다. 이들은 카트 잎을 문신에 사용하는 식물인 헤나로 위장해 한국으로 들여온 뒤 미국으로 밀수출하려 했다.이들은 한국을 거치면 미국 반입이 쉬울 것으로 여겼던 것으로 드러났다. 한국이 세관 검색이 까다로운 것으로 알려졌기 때문이다.
