The governing party unilaterally approved the appointment of a controversial Supreme Court Justice nominee on Wednesday using its majority, ending a week long partisan fight over the nomination. The National Assembly voted 151 to 6 in favor of the appointment of Park Sang-ok to the Supreme Court. One vote was counted as invalid. The main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy, numbering 130, boycotted the vote in protest. Persisting disagreements on public service pension reforms between the main parties held off a plenary voting on related amendments and scores of other economy-related bills. The nomination of Park has been pending in the Assembly since January due to the opposition's objection. The NPAD says the ex-prosecutor actively participated in the alleged cover-up of the torture death of Park Jong-chul, a student protester under police custody, in January 1987. Park denied the accusations, saying he had been a junior prosecutor following orders from higher-ups.

국회는 6일 본회의를 열어 박상옥 대법관 후보자 임명동의안을 처리했다. 지난 1월26일 국회에 제출된 지 꼬박 100일 만이다.

동의안은 찬성 151표, 반대 6표, 무효 1표로 가결됐다. 박 후보자 임명을 반대하는 새정치민주연합과 정의당 의원들은 표결에 불참했다. 새누리당 의원 158명만 참여했다. 박근혜 대통령은 최대한 빨리 박 후보자에 대한 임명 절차를 마무리할 것으로 알려졌다.

신영철 전 대법관 퇴임 후 83일 동안 이어져 온 대법관의 장기 공백 사태는 해결 절차에 들어갔다. 하지만 국회 안팎에서는 87년 민주화의 도화선이자 상징인 박종철 열사의 죽음에 대한 모독이라는 비판이 거세게 일고 있다. 87년 1월 박 열사가 고문을 받고 죽은 다음날 당시 치안본부장은 "책상을 탁 치니 억하고 죽었다"고 말했다. 당시 고문경찰의 수사를 맡은 박 후보자는 사건을 은폐·축소했다는 비판을 받고 있다.
