[Global Korea] Justice Chief Whang Kyo-Ahn, Nominated New Prime Minister

President Park Geun-hye on Thursday nominated Justice Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn as the new prime minister, calling him "the right man" to achieve political reforms proposed in the wake of a high-profile graft scandal involving her close confidants. Park's decision to tap Hwang, a former veteran prosecutor, for the nation's No. 2 post appeared to reflect her desire to end the political vacuum caused by the escalating scandal and to seek fresh momentum for her reform drive. "Hwang has a deep understanding of the president's philosophy on state management, and is the right man to build a new Republic of Korea by eradicating corruptive practices and achieving political reform," said Senior Press Secretary Kim Sung-woo. "I will do my best to uphold the people's wishes, with an understanding that taking care of the socially weak is also a crucial national task while achieving people's harmony and social integration."

[글로벌코리아]새 총리 후보에 황교안 전 법무장관 내정

박근혜 대통령은 21일 새 국무총리 후보자에 황교안 법무부 장관(58)을 지명했다.

김성우 홍보수석은 이날 브리핑을 통해 "황 내정자는 대구고검장, 부산고검장 등 검찰 내 주요 보직을 거쳤고 박근혜 정부 출범 이후 법무장관으로 직무를 수행해오면서 대통령의 국정 철학에 대한 이해가 깊다"며 "사회 전반의 부정부패를 뿌리 뽑아 새 한국을 만들고 정치개혁을 이룰 적임자"라고 인선 배경을 밝혔다.

청와대는 다음달 중순 박 대통령의 미국 방문을 앞둔 만큼 국회 인사청문회와 인준 절차를 가급적 빨리 마무리 지어 국정 공백 기간을 단축하겠다는 방침이다. 또 황 내정자가 인사청문회를 통과해 국회 인준 절차까지 마무리되면 후임 법무장관 인선도 진행할 계획이다.



한편 황 내정자는 이날 청와대의 발표 직후 과천 법무부 청사에서 기자회견을 열고 "여러모로 부족한 제가 어느 때보다 엄중한 시기에 국무총리 후보자로 지명된 데 대해 무거운 책임감을 느낀다"며 "경제활성화와 민생 안정을 이루고 비정상의 정상화 등 나라의 기본을 바로잡는 데 최선을 다하겠다" 말했다.
