A True Story 65 Years Ago. Made Into the Film 'Into the Crossfire'

"Mother, I have killed a man. There must be around ten men behind the thin stone wall. Arms and legs have been torn out. Mother, why must war exist? I washed my inner wear yesterday. I don't know why I thought of grave clothes as I put on my washed and clean inner wear. I might die today, but I will live on. I will return to you no matter what. Mother! I miss the lettuce-wrapped rice. I want to drink up ice water endlessly. Ah! The enemy is approaching. I'll write again. Mother, Bye! Bye! Ah, not bye. I'll write again. Lee Woo Gun, a middle school third grader who fought in the Korean War and died, left a letter to his mother which was found buried."

The letter was found in his clothes on August eleventh 1950 at the battle of Pohang girl's middle school. This became the plot for the movie 'Into the Crossfire'. The letter will be revealed at the National Museum of Korea, third floor Design Gallery Room, from the twenty first of this month to June seventh. The exhibition's theme is 'Reading the generation of Hangul Letter'. Among the letters to be displayed, the oldest Korean letter by Na Shin-Gil, a military officer from the Joseon Dynasty. From electronic mail (e-mail) after the 1990's to modern communication network (SNS) will be introduced. Also, the exhibition will provide information on the changes of communication method and related language character and lifestyle.

"어머니! 나는 사람을 죽였습니다. 돌담 하나를 사이에 두고 10여 명은 될 것입니다. 적은 팔·다리가 떨어져 나갔습니다. 어머니! 전쟁은 왜 해야 하나요? 어제 내복을 빨아 입었습니다. 물내나는 청결한 내복을 입으면서 저는 왜 수의를 생각해냈는지 모릅니다. 어쩌면 제가 오늘 죽을지도 모릅니다. 하지만 저는 살아가겠습니다. 꼭 살아서 가겠습니다. 어머니! 상추쌈이 먹고 싶습니다. 이가 시리도록 차가운 냉수를 한없이 들이키고 싶습니다. 아! 놈들이 다가오고 있습니다. 다시 또 쓰겠습니다. 어머니 안녕! 안녕! 아, 안녕은 아닙니다. 다시 쓸 테니까요. 그럼…"

학도병으로 한국전쟁에 참전했다가 전사한 서울 동성중학교 3학년 이우근이 어머니 앞으로 썼다가 부치지 못한 편지다. 편지는 1950년 8월 11일 포항여중 전투에서 전사한 그의 옷속 수첩에서 발견됐다. 이 전투는 영화 '포화 속으로'(2010)의 소재가 됐다. 편지는 국립한글박물관에서 오는 21일부터 6월 7일까지 박물관 3층 기획전시실에서 선보일 예정이다. '한글 편지, 시대를 읽다'라는 주제의 전시회다. 이 자리에서는 현존하는 한글 편지 중 가장 오래된 조선시대 군관 나신걸의 편지도 있다. 또1990년대 이후 전자우편(이메일)과 최근의 누리소통망(SNS)에 이르기까지 다양한 소통 수단을 통한 시대 이야기를 소개된다. 한편 소통 매체의 변화와 관련된 언어문자 생활도 재미있게 풀이될 예정이다.
